Keep the PLAYful Side In You!
By Carole J. Brandi

Two years ago, four gals from Sweden made quite a stir on the American airwaves with their song "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me." Now in their mid-teens, Anna, Anais, Faye, and Rosie of PLAY are doing it all over again with a fresh new sound on their latest album, Replay. They played at New York's Z-100 Zootopia concert, and hit major radio airwaves across the nation this past summer. Two new videos by this quartet are also ripping up MTV, "I Must Not Chase the Boys" and "Whole Again."

NewsClick sat down with PLAY at Sony Records' New York office right after their photo shoot and found out that these girls are definitely playing for keeps!

NC: Tell us about high school.
Anna: I attend Kunskapsskolan High School in Sweden. My favorite subjects are Swedish and history.
Anais: For the last two years, the rest of us have been schooling on the Internet. We went to an actual school for one year.

NC: How does online school compare to regular classroom learning? How many hours do you spend each day studying?
Faye: Three to four hours a day. The fun part about regular school is your friends.
Anais: Working hard in school can be really boring, but then being rewarded with a good grade is awesome. That feeling of 'Wow! I did it! I got an A' feels really good.
Anna: Good grades are great for your future.

NC: Do any of you aspire to go to college?
Anais: Yes, someday in the future. College will be so much fun. If we could, we would experience it, but we don't have time right now because we're doing so much.

NC: How did you meet and get involved in Play?
Anais: Three years ago, Anna and I were singing and dancing in musicals. Our manager Laila Bagge asked us if we wanted to start a group. Then she wanted to add two other members. She held auditions for 700 girls and picked Faye and Rosie.

NC: Rosie, how did you feel about winning the audition?
Rosie: It was cool because we [Faye and I] were friends before the audition and Laila picked both of us without even knowing that. So it was fate.

NC: How did you come up with the group name Play?
Anais: That was actually our manager's idea, and we thought it was really good because it stands for what we do. We express ourselves in music... We "play" music, "play" instruments. Be "playful..." and be positive in life.

NC: How was walking the orange carpet for the Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards?
Anna: It was awesome! BRITNEY SPEARS, JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, JIM CARREY and BRAD PITT were there.Yes, it's true! We actually met Brad Pitt and he is all that.

NC: What was your most embarrassing concert moment?
Rosie: When I split my pants. Everyone was there, including O TOWN and BOW WOW. The funny thing was we were going to have a press conference right after the show and I didn't have any clothes to change into.
Anna: I was actually standing behind her and I saw how she went down. She was doing this dance step and suddenly, I saw her underwear!

NC: So you just kept dancing?
Rosie: I was trying to hide it. You can only do so much about it. You have to go on with the show. It's worse if you run off the stage.

NC: How do you girls kick back?
Anais: I like being home with my closest girlfriends. We meet up and eat ice cream, do facials, watch romantic movies, and cry and talk about everything. Having those moments with your friends is so important because you get to know them better and you can really relate to them.
Rosie: I like walking. I can walk into the city and back all by myself just listening to music and relaxing. I get to see so [many] different [things], and the music makes me feel good. I get a little tired, but it keeps me in good shape.
Faye: The first day I come home [from being on the road] is so special because I've missed my bed so much. Then I eat a Swedish breakfast. After a couple of hours, I meet up with friends at a cafe and talk about everything that happened to me and the group. It's great to see them again when I've been gone for a while.
Anna: When I'm home I just relax and take it easy, chill out with my friends, and go to parties. I just do normal things, like go to school.
