Alternative Athletics: Take a Break from Played-Out Sports
By Paul D. Rosevear

The CollegeBound Network NewsClick -- Basketball, football, soccer, and baseball -- these are probably the games that pop into your head when you think about university athletics. Just because those particular sports are the ones that receive the most funding from schools and the most promotion in the media, however, doesn't mean your sports options have to end there. Most colleges offer a wide variety of athletic options for those who want to explore beyond the tried and true sports staples. Dance team, golf, and fencing are alternative ways to break a sweat and feed your competitive spirit at school.

Cutting a Rug -- or a Court?
If you want to support your school's athletics, but are more into grooving than cheering, joining the dance squad might be for you. These ladies are somewhat like cheerleaders, since they are on the basketball or football sidelines rooting for the home team. But instead of waving pom-poms and forming pyramids, they step on the field and show off intricate dance moves to pump up the athletes and the crowd. You've got to be outgoing and athletic to participate in this sport, but it's a great self-esteem builder since you know your school's spirit is depending on the way you shake your stuff!

Hole-in-One Habit
Patience is a virtue in life, but it's a straight-up necessity on the golf green. If you're the type of person who works slowly and deliberately, you may find yourself scoring major points as a golfer. Plus, you'll never have to worry about cracking under the pressure of hustling side by side with your opponent. You have the luxury of an entire turn to yourself -- so long as you can deliver under the glare of many silent onlookers! Though less glorified and publicized than basketball or football, golf is a truly competitive game among students on the college level.

En Garde!
Did you think the only place you'd find sword fighting on campus was in the school play? Not so! Fencing is a long-celebrated college sport that, like golf, never receives quite as much attention as its fellow athletics, but remains a lasting tradition among university students. For the more individually minded athlete, fencing provides that one-on-one competition you crave. There will be no relying on your teammates here -- it's every man (or woman) for himself!
