Pay for School and Save Money, Too!
By Robyn Tellefsen
February/March 2003

The CollegeBound Network NewsClick -- How can STONE COLD, the sleeper hold, and SmackDown! help you work your way through college? While watching wrestling on TV probably won't relieve your financial burdens, working at The WORLD (formerly WWF New York) might. Just ask recent Rutgers University grad' Stephanie Fisher, who served World Wrestling Entertainment fans delicious dishes in the heart of Times Square, and got a big college cash tip in return.

While at Rutgers, Marlboro, NJ-based Stephanie found waitressing to be truly tuition-feasible. "Working at [The WORLD] helped me pay for college," says Stephanie. She shelled out about $13,000 each year for room and board at Rutgers, with an extra $1,000 for books. But, she says, working at The WORLD through her last two years at school covered all of those costs. She even had cash to spare!

How is this financial dream-come-true possible with an hourly wage of $3.55, which Stephanie never saw because of taxes? It's simple: In addition to her restaurant duties, she also worked as a cocktail waitress at The WORLD nightclub. "That's where the money is, and it's all tips," she says.

Working 30-35 hours at the restaurant and nightclub during the weekend, while balancing a double major in journalism and media studies and anthropology, was tough at times, says Stephanie. She was determined, however, to make her situation work. If she had an exam on Monday, she knew that she didn't have the whole weekend to study, and would plan accordingly. "After work, I'd wake up around 1 p.m., and then study for as many hours as I could without killing myself," she says.

Though Stephanie worked like crazy, she had no complaints. "I don't think it's lame that I spent my weekends working," she insists. "It was fun to me." After all, there were perks. While she didn't know a pile driver from a drop kick before her waitressing days, she got to pal around at work with WWE superstars like VINCE and STEPHANIE McMAHON.

So, what are you waiting for? Turn off that wrestling Pay-Per-View, and let The WORLD of sports entertainment start paying you!
