Leaving your parents' nest to move into a barren
cell of a room is one heck of a transition. But
each year, millions of college students somehow
make it work. We all know nothing will top the
warm, homey feeling of your bedroom and the way
it fits your personality like a glove. But why
not try to spice up your new room (or the one
you're in now) with an extra sprinkle of home
sweet home?
Here
are NewsClick's Top 10 decor essentials
to help you out:
1.
Add color and texture to liven things up. Your
room may be small and cold, but you can turn up
the jazziness and comfort levels by simply
adding color. Think of the hues and textures of
the clothes you wear, whether it be your favorite
pair of jeans or an old cozy sweater, and use
these elements (paint the walls, add fabrics over
old curtains or couches) to make your area more
exciting and welcoming.
2. Apply smiling faces and crazy
high school pictures to your dorm duds. Whether
your photos are of family or friends, they'll
never go out of style. Hunt for unique, out-of-the
ordinary frames at your favorite home furnishings
store, and watch your photos bring your room to
life.
3.
Dorm rooms either have icky yellow carpet or a
cement floor. Neither option is flattering, but
there is hope. Instead pick a multi-colored rug
or even a cool comforter for the floor (just add
some velcro hold-in-place stickers to create an
anti-skid effect).
4.
Pop-up cubes are key for out-of-the-way storage,
but can be as cool as they are practical. When
needed for a tote they spring into action, but
when they're empty, they fold down flat and take
up almost no space.
5.
Need some help making friends on your floor? Try
decorating your room with something fun and unique
like a gumball machine or mimi popcorn popper.
Set up a jar full of pennies, too, and you'll
be the hottest topic on your floor.
6.
Liven up your essentials. Wrapping denim around
your wastebasket is cute (even if you'll dread
throwing sticky, yucky garbage in it!). You can
even hang some not-burnt-correctly CDs from your
windows as sun-catchers, too. No waste!
7.
Has your bed become the center of attention in
your room? If so, pick up a bed pocket. It's stylish
and functionable enough to organize your bedside
necessities.
8.
Did the college (or mom) give you ancient, lackluster
curtains to live with? Give your room a down home
country feel instead with some funky corduroy
curtains or groovy beads.
9.
Feeling lost without your pet at school? Liven
up your life and get an instant aquarium. Make
friends with your fake fish, and remember you
don't have to assign the job of cleaning the tank
to any of your roomies.
10.
Talk about the weekend's hottest gossip at your
very own water cooler. Not only will it add spunk
to your room, but you'll get your recommended
daily serving of H2O each day. Log onto Urbanoutfitters
to order one for $20.
