chatted with Hilary this past May as she
was preparing to present a humanitarian
award to former South African president
Nelson Mandela. Here's what the talented
teen had to say...
NewsClick:
How did you get the opportunity to present
Nelson Mandela with an award?
Hilary:
"I've
done charity work since I was three years
old with Kids with a Cause. [It's] a charity
where teens in the entertainment industry
work to raise money for less-fortunate children
and children with AIDS and cancer by providing
hospital visits and mentoring programs."
NewsClick:
How did you land the role of Lizzie McGuire?
Hilary:
"Over 500 girls tried out and I had
to go through five callbacks. Then I didn't
hear until six weeks later that I landed
it. You can't take any of it to heart because
out of 500 auditions, you may get one part."

Tell us about school.
Hilary:
"I have a tutor who works with me on
set three hours [every day]. I'm excited
[about] this fall because
I'll be a freshman in high
school."
NewsClick:
Do you plan to go to college?
Hilary:
"Definitely! That's really important
[to me]. I don't know if I'm going to be
working, but I hope to go right into college."
NewsClick:
How are you balancing being a student, actress,
volunteer, and now, a singer?
Hilary:
"Being organized! I love my job and
sometimes I have to miss out on school events,
but many of my friends go to high school
so I get to go to some parties as my schedule
permits."
NewsClick:
Why are you now adding music to your "activity
plate?"
Hilary:
"My sister Haylie is in a band and
I always thought it would be fun going into
the studio and writing."
NewsClick:
What advice can you offer teens who want
to pursue dreams like yours?
Hilary:
"If
you really want it, you have to stick with
it. You have
to sacrifice a lot. Don't give up because
it takes a lot of time to actually get somewhere."
