The CollegeBound Network NewsClick -- Ever feel
beads of sweat on your forehead as you brace yourself
for that geometry exam? Rather take American history
than algebra?
Sounds like you're suffering
from math anxiety. Don't
fret, lots of students harbor such harrowing fears
of digits. Help isn't far away. Try a math intervention.
Teri Schwartz, assistant
professor of psychology at Queens College, Queens,
NY, has been holding such group studies since
last year. "We aim to get people in touch
with the way they see math and why they get so
tense when doing math problems," she explains.
"We try to teach them skills to keep negative
thinking in check."
Schwartz and her team of
instructors get the job done by introducing breathing
exercises, study habits, and techniques to break
down math problems step by step. She's noticed
a change for the better. And, says Joanne Guschk,
who participated in the group as part of a requirement
for her psychology class, it worked for her.
"In the past, I felt
like I didn't study enough," says the sophomore
English major. "Now I feel less anxious.
Sometimes you just need to walk away for a few
minutes and clear your head."
