Even if you don't think you'll win a scholarship,
apply anyway. You never know...
Scholarship Saves Megan Mega 'Out-of-Pocket' Bucks!
By Rochelle DelGaizo Billera
October 2001
The CollegeBound Network NewsClick -- Megan Siren was at a local
community pool where she had worked as a lifeguard when she got
word of her scholarship winnings.
"I was very shocked,
but excited [upon hearing the news],"
says Megan, now a freshman at University of California-Davis, Davis,
CA, who initially discovered the scholarship while surfing the Internet.
"I
was speechless."
Even though Megan was
an avid tennis player, boasted an impressive 4.0 GPA, participated
in community service (she
distributed Christmas gifts to needy children, cleaned up local
ground sites, and served food to shelter residents),
and submitted acceptable letters of recommendation, she was still
amazed at receiving an award from Mervyn's
and the Women's Sports Foundation Scholarship Fund. The scholarship
recognizes young women who have shown excellence in sports and academics,
by helping them to pursue a college education.
Megan was overwhelmed
to find out that she was among 240 female student-athletes who had
won the $1,000 portion of Mervyn's scholarship. Imagine her surprise
when she advanced to the semifinal round, and was ultimately chosen
as a $10,000 winner?!
Inspired by her scholarship
success with Mervyn's, Megan sought out other college cash opportunities
for which she applied. Her efforts paid off when she was granted
an additional $10,000 of combined various local scholarships.
With a strong will, determination, and a lack
of financial worries, Megan is sure to make a huge splash into her
college career.
