The Things We Do For Money!

By Gina LaGuardia

The CollegeBound Network NewsClick -- Okay, so we're not stranding ourselves on a desert island for college cash a la Survivor, but surely, if we had to, we would!

"When it comes to scoring a scholarship, I'd do almost anything... after all, my grades aren't exactly where they should be." How many times have you uttered that phrase to yourself? If it's numbering in the hundreds, worry not. Take a look at some 'alternative' ways to earn a college cash stash!

Get to Baking. Students interested in attending the Culinary Institute of America, Baltimore, MA, can enter their favorite apple pie recipe in an attempt to score a tuition-tasty $5,000 prize. Click into for the yummy details.

Concrete Creations = Cash. Each year, civil engineering college students race concrete canoes they design and build, and then "market" their engineered products to a panel of judges. The prize: best-boat bragging rights and scholarship awards totaling $9,000. See if you've got the right balance of engineering knowledge to enter: Click in!

Barking For Bucks. Your dog may very well be your best friend if the pooch helps you score $2,500! The Dog Writer's Educational Trust Scholarship awards students who have taken part in dog shows, raised guide dogs, or worked with a humane group. Only written commands for info are accepted; write: Mary Ellen Tarman, P.O. Box E, Hummelstown, PA 17036-0199.

Do Some Lit' Class Recycling. We've all written essays about the classics. Now you can enter your A+ paper in Signet Classic's Scholarship Essay Contest. This year's topic: The Scarlet Letter. See if you can hit the Red A scholarship bullseye; current essay topics are online.

Baa Baa... Bucks! If you can home-construct a garment of at least 60% wool and win a state-level "Make It Yourself With Wool" competition (there is such a thing!), you may be able to sew up a nice $1,000 national scholarship! Snuggle up to for the stitch-by-stitch scholarship scoop.
