Okay, maybe
not... At this point, you're happy you made it
this far! Still, college graduation will
be here before you know it and trust us -- when
you see the high-caliber celebrities and in-the-news
notables your big day will bring, you'll agree
it was well worth the wait! See for yourself as
we tour some of the coolest Class of 2001 college
commencements...
The COOLEST Speaker: Graduation
ceremonies are many things, but rockin' usually
isn't one of them. Unless, of course, you invite
JON BON JOVI to speak. Students at Monmouth University,
West Long Branch, NJ, certainly lucked out this
year by snagging the New Jersey native rock icon
to give their keynote address. Officially, the
university chose Jon "because of his artistic
success in the world of entertainment and philanthropic
generosity to the local community." We think
the fact that he's absolutely awesome had something
to do with it, too.
The "WHO YOU GONNA'
CALL?" Speaker: For Columbia College
Chicago, one of the country's largest arts and
communications schools, it was HAROLD RAMIS, actor,
director, producer, and writer. You may remember
him best as Dr. Egon Spengler from your fave 80s
film, Ghostbusters.
The MOST WANTED Speaker:
In a survey of over 9,000, class of 2001 University
of California - Berkeley students, former Attorney
General JANET RENO was the most requested keynote
speaker. Luckily, school officials delivered the
highly coveted commencement speaker!
The MOST VIRTUAL (and
BASED ON A TRUE STORY) Speaker: Jones International
University, the first fully accredited online
university, brought graduation to the Net, too,
with a Webcast of a degree conferment ceremony,
and a keynote address from the real ERIN
BROCKOVICH. We say 'the real one' as opposed to
Julia Roberts who portrayed her on film (and won
an Academy Award for doing so!).
The KINDA' PLAYED OUT
BUT STILL COOL Speaker:
Every year, at some college, somewhere, there's
bound to be a university welcoming BILL COSBY
as its featured speaker. This year it was Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY. As if his Doctorate
in Education (Ed.D) from University of Massachusetts,
Amherst, and his countless contributions to aid
needy students weren't enough, Cosby spreads his
message each year to graduating seniors. "It is
always a pleasure to see those fresh faces of
the new graduates," says Cosby in the Rensselaer
student newspaper.
