"Guess Who's Speaking at My School?!"
by Lynda Kessler
May 2002

The CollegeBound Network NewsClick --
Whether it's a politician or a movie star, it's definitely cool to have a celebrity as the guest speaker at your graduation. Besides, you'd be getting A+ advice from someone who has made it big -- after excelling in undergrad', of course.

Power to Her Political Path
HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON will be speaking at the
commencement ceremony of State University of New York College at Brockport (SUNY Brockport), Brockport, NY, on May 18th. As a former first lady and the present Senator of New York, Clinton will be able to offer the graduates lots of compelling words of wisdom, especially for females looking to follow in her political footsteps.

Whoop... There She Is!
Can your college graduation be as exciting as the Oscars? If WHOOPI GOLDBERG is in the mix, it's a sure thing! This is great news for the 600 graduating seniors at
Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA. That's because on May 31st, the veteran comedienne, actress, and humanitarian will shed some "get ready for the real world" advice and encouragement.

The Welcomed Return of the Alum'
Funny man BILL COSBY, the most famous alum' of Temple University, Philadephia, PA, has become a fixture by speaking at several of the school's ceremonies. Cosby, who is also a trustee of the school, is considered "a special order of business" for the ceremonies. According to Temple faculty, his stardom lights up the room, and his wisdom sends grads off into the real world with a great attitude.

Name That Voice
Just in time for the new Star Wars movie (although he isn't doing the voice of Darth Vader in the new film) is JAMES EARL JONES, speaking at Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY. Probably one of the most famous voices through his amazing film career, as well as his telephone ads, graduates will be honored to hear Jones' thoughts. As an Ithaca news staff writer, Julie Cochran says, "The force will be with the class of 2002."

This Journalist Plans to Communicate
It may not be news to you, but broadcast giant TOM BROKAW is speaking at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD. Senior class p resident Stephen Goutman says, "A celebrity speaker in our case Tom Brokaw, has excited many people on campus, especially the senior class." The opportunity to hear him helps make up for all the long hours in the library, sleepless nights, labor in labs, and group projects." Adding to the festivities... future baseball Hall of Famer, CAL RIPKIN, JR. will be on hand to receive an honorary degree.

What's so cool about the speakers giving their time and educational tips to the students at these colleges and universities? And how does this relate to you, a high schooler? Many of these commencement ceremonies are actually open to the public, which would make it a great time to visit some campuses. You can not only check out the school as a possible college to apply to in the fall, but you'll also hear from some of America's best orators.
