The
CollegeBound Network NewsClick -- How can Stone Cold, the
sleeper hold, and SmackDown! help you work your way through
college? While watching wrestling on TV probably won't relieve
your financial burdens, working at WWF New York might. Just
ask Rutgers University senior Stephanie Fisher, who serves
Worldwide Wrestling Federation fans delicious dishes in the
heart of Times Square, and gets a big college cash tip in
return.
This
22-year-old from Marlboro, NJ, has found waitressing to be
truly tuition-feasible. "Working at the WWF New York
is helping me pay for college," says Stephanie. She shells
out about $13,000 each year for room and board at Rutgers,
with an extra $1,000 for books. But, she says, working at
WWF New York since May of 2000, has covered all of those costs.
She even has cash to spare!
How
is this financial dream-come-true possible with an hourly
wage of $3.55, which Stephanie never sees because of taxes?
It's simple: In addition to her restaurant duties, she also
works as a cocktail waitress at the WWF nightclub. "That's
where the money is, and it's all tips," she says.
Working 30-35 hours at the restaurant and nightclub during
the weekend, with a double major in journalism and media studies
and anthropology, can be tough to balance at times, says Stephanie.
However, she strives to make her situation work. If she has
an exam on Monday, she knows that she doesn't have the whole
weekend to study. "After work, I'll wake up around 1
p.m., and then study for as many hours as I can without killing
myself," she says.
Though
Stephanie works like crazy, she's not complaining about her
job. "I don't think it's lame that I spend the whole
weekend working," she insists. "It's fun to me."
After all, there are perks. While she didn't know a
pile driver from a drop kick before her waitressing days,
now she gets to pal around at work with WWF superstars like
Vince and Stephanie McMahon.
When Stephanie graduates from Rutgers in May, she'll continue
working at WWF New York -- until she finds a job in her career
of choice. "If the job I love is financially hurting
me, I can still work at the nightclub," she asserts.
Talk
about true job-dedication and enthusiasm for well-deserved
college funds!
