Help Save the World -- One Student Chapter at a Time!

By Feona Sharhran Huff
April 2002

The CollegeBound Network NewsClick -- Healy Thompson doesn't believe she can stop the spread of AIDS all by herself. Through her participation in the Williams College, Williamstown, MA, chapter of The Student Global AIDS Campaign (SGAC), however, she feels confident that she can assist in educating her college mates, the school's surrounding community members, and the world, on the deadly disease.

Healy, often involved in making a positive contribution to the world, first found out about SGAC in her Women's Development class when her teacher informed her of a Harvard conference on the National AIDS Society. From the moment she stepped into the room filled with hundreds of people, Healy knew she had to get active.

"I got the feeling of empowerment," Healy admits. And, she wasn't the only one. Healy and some of her classmates felt compelled to do something, and decided to form the Williams College chapter of SGAC last November. They've been hard at work ever since.

"I want to get people at Williams and in the community to take action and become [AIDS] activists -- writing to members of Congress, the Senate, newspapers, etc.," says Healy, who plays an integral part in the implementation of action for her school's 40-member chapter.

Healy's SGAC chapter has already co-sponsored an AIDS Awareness Week on campus, where student bands performed in a benefit concert. They even started a letter-writing campaign.

"We collected letters to be sent to the Senator of Williamstown, MA, asking him to support funding for global AIDS," says Healy.

Healy's work is just beginning, and she's up for the challenge. "Ultimately, I want to be a part of a group that changes the future of the world and helps wipe out AIDS."
