Need money
to help pay for next semester's expenses?! Get
the 4-1-1 on jobs to help you secure the cash.
Get with a Summer Work-It Plan!

The CollegeBound Network NewsClick -- Even though
summer break is right around the corner ("thank
goodness," you say) and your class assignment
concerns are about to come to a screeching halt,
you're not completely out of the woods. That's
because there's still the matter of raising cash
for your out-of-pocket college expenses. Did you
forget that your financial aid package might not
cover your entire college bill or those pricey
textbooks? You're sorta' in financial aid limbo.
Why not use your summer wisely by working to raise
extra cash?
"But I'm not
sure where I should begin my summer job hunt!"
Perhaps
you're not looking hard enough. There are jobs
just waiting for you to fill out an app.' In case
you need proof, read on...
Babysitting.
Have you ever watched your lil' brother or sister,
cousins, or the neighbor's kids? If you answered
a resounding '"yes," then you're perfect
for this much-needed job. After all, tons of parents
have functions they must attend after work and
desperately need a responsible young person with
experience to watch over their pride-and-joys.
Not to mention, you'll earn a nice paycheck. These
days, the starting rate for an experienced babysitter
is $10 an hour. Let's say you put in eight hours.
That's $80 a day, math whiz! Multiply that by
five days and you'll pull in $400. And, if you're
lucky enough to work an entire month, you'll rake
in a whopping $1,600. You get the point.
Post Office.
Yep... the postal service is definitely hiring.
That's because they are always in need of workers
to help distribute mail to the billions of people
who have registered addresses. The summer is one
of the best times to seek employment. In fact,
supervisors happily embrace college students.
I should know, since I was one of many college
students who worked at my hometown's airport post
office. You can even choose between four shifts
-- morning, afternoon, midnight, or graveyard.
(I worked the afternoon shift.) Your work reward
is a phat (and fat!) pay check. Trust me!
Fast-food Restaurants.
Let's not forget about McDonald's, Burger King,
Wendy's, and Kentucky Fried Chicken -- eating
spots all of us have frequented. Instead of being
the spender, you can become this summer's "Hello-may-I-take-your-order?"
money-maker. It may not pay $10 an hour like some
jobs, but at least you know you'll be making some
honest change that'll help foot your college bills
(and get ya' a free lunch or two).
Newspaper Route.
Just think about the number of people in your
neighborhood who read the newspaper daily. A lot,
huh?! This could mean mega bucks for you -- that
is, if you decide to go the paper-boy or paper-girl
route. Although you'll more than likely work seven
days a week, you'd only be putting in a couple
of hours a day (just enough time to deliver the
papers and collect payment). The remainder of
those summer fun days will be yours for the sunnin.'
Word to the wise:
If you take advantage of your summer months by
getting a job, you'll be a stress-free student
when it comes time to start school again. Besides,
your focus will really have to be on hitting the
books -- not on those "how am I gonna pay for
my room and board?" blues.
