Who says it's impossible
to get money for school? Not these student-athletes. They stepped
out on their scholastic and sports abilities and scored cash!
Student-Athletes Earn College Cash!

The CollegeBound Network NewsClick -- Briana Doré Sacco and
Stephanie Elaine Crosby have something else in common besides their
student-athlete status and spectacular sports stats. These female
college freshmen are also winners of the Meryvn's and Women's Sports
Foundation Scholarship Fund.
Open to female high school seniors entering college as full-timers,
this annual award -- ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 -- supports
and encourages young women who excel academically and athletically
by providing the financial means for them to pursue a college education.
Beaming brightly at the news of winning $1,000, which she applied
to a Florida training trip over Christmas break, Briana, a swimmer
for Austin College, Austin, TX, says she learned early on that you
can achieve both your academic and athletic dreams as long as your
priorities are in order. That means education comes first. Then
again, she attributes athletics to helping her develop savvy scholastic
strategies.
"Swimming has forced me to manage my time," Briana acknowledges.
"I had to realize that with my coursework and practice schedule,
I couldn't afford to waste time. When I get the chance, I get my
homework done first."
That's precisely Stephanie's stance, too. As a member of the
track and cheerleading teams at Baylor University, Waco, TX, her
free time is quite limited. However, Stephanie counts on the discipline
she's learned through athletics to keep her in A+ shape -- which
put her in a perfect position to win Mervyn's $1,000 scholarship.
"Winning this showed me that all of my hard work paid off
and that someone else recognized it, too," says Stephanie.
What sets Briana and Stephanie apart from other student-athletes
is that they were wise enough to apply for college cash -- even
if winning it seemed like a far-fetched reality. The two agree it's
worth a try!
"Get out there and apply for every scholarship you can,"
Stephanie urges. "Present who you really are and let [the scholarship
committee] know why you deserve the scholarship."
Briana concurs: "You'll never know if you could receive
the money if you don't make the attempt to begin with."
