C on Friendship, Transition, and "The Itch" - 2 |
Celeb 101: Did you write the song "Graduation"?
VC: I co-wrote it with someone. It's about friendship.
Celeb
101: What made you decide to write a song like that at that point
rather than much further back?
VC: It's not only about friendship. It's about transition. It
was about a particular friendship that I've had that has endured many
years and I was just thinking about how important it is and how you
really sort of have to work at it. That brought me back to a time
when I thought we would be friends forever and that it seemed so easy.
Then I started thinking about high school and about transition. It's
such a universal theme. We move on the first time from high school
to college and then it's a pattern that repeats itself. You're gonna
have that transition again when you leave college. Then again when
you get your first job or you move to a different city. The same thing
happens over and over again. The only things that remain constant
in our lives are friendship and people.

| Advice
to aspiring musicians: "Learn how to play an instrument
and to write your own songs so you have more control over what
you can and cannot do. And, don't let anyone tell you 'no'!" |
