A GED Is Your
Ticket to Get Ahead

In order to prove your knowledge, capabilities, and skills as a student without a high school diploma, you'll need to take the General Education Development (GED) test. The GED enables you to earn your high school equivalency so that you may further your career, apply to college, or get a job. Most schools require a high school diploma for admission to their collegiate programs. If you don't have a diploma, most schools will accept the GED. Think of it as your ticket to get ahead!

In order to be eligible to take the GED test, you must not currently attend high school and, in most states, be at least 16 years old. (In some states, the minimum age is 18; check with your local GED office). The GED is designed to fulfill requirements that a student with a high school diploma will have gained from their schooling. The exams are evaluated against the current secondary school system to make sure the appropriate skills are tested.

The GED tests skills in math, science, reading, writing, and social studies. These five sections take approximately seven hours to complete. Depending on the state, students will pass the exam with at least a 50 to 60 percent score. The GED is not given every day so it's important to check on the dates and register for the appropriate time, which also varies by state. Students can register for the GED in English, Spanish, and Braille, among other accommodating factors.

The cost of the GED is also dependent on the state in which a student lives. Some states have no charge associated with the GED, while others may cost up to $80. There are testing locations spread throughout the country that can be found on the American Council on Education's (ACE) Website.

Like any other test, it is important to study for the GED and take many practice tests to familiarize oneself with the exam. Each person has different study habits and needs, so the time necessary to prepare will vary from person to person. There are many different books and online resources available to help students accomplish this successfully. There are also some community colleges that offer GED preparation classes so students should check into this option as well.

In order to arrive at their dream career, students must take the appropriate path to getting to where they want to be. The first step is certainly with a high school diploma or GED. It's never too late to get on the right path and the GED is just the first step to starting a new life.
