In order to be eligible to take the GED test, you must not currently attend high school and, in most states, be at least 16 years old. (In some states, the minimum age is 18; check with your local GED office). The GED is designed to fulfill requirements that a student with a high school diploma will have gained from their schooling. The exams are evaluated against the current secondary school system to make sure the appropriate skills are tested.
The GED tests skills in math, science, reading, writing, and social studies. These five sections take approximately seven hours to complete. Depending on the state, students will pass the exam with at least a 50 to 60 percent score. The GED is not given every day so it's important to check on the dates and register for the appropriate time, which also varies by state. Students can register for the GED in English, Spanish, and Braille, among other accommodating factors. |
