Your Summer To-Do List
by CB Staff
Whether you're about to graduate or have another year to go, there's plenty of college stuff to do...
We Know What You Did Last Summer -- Make This One Count!
Juniors:
Call or e-mail colleges and universities you're interested in and request a viewbook (also called a college guide) and application. It'll help you get a more specific idea of each one's offerings and requirements.
Create a resume of high school achievements, volunteer experience, and extra curricular activities. This will help you assess your application strengths and weaknesses.
Build up your bargaining power by spending the summer doing something productive, such as community service, gaining career experience as an intern, or studying up for the SATs.
Do some traveling -- on the collegiate path, that is! Now's the perfect time to tour the colleges and universities you're interested in. Call ahead to make arrangements, and try to visit when the summer semester is in session.
Seniors:
Be sure to send prospective colleges appropriate documents regarding Advanced Placement credits (you'll receive your scores in July) and/or credits from special programs like "College Now."
Check with colleges to see when freshmen orientation is held and plan your summer vacation according.
Contact your soon-to-be roommate to discuss who's bringing what. On a similar note, find out if your dorm has restrictions on items such as microwaves, coffeepots, etc., or supplies services like voicemail or computers before you go shopping.
You can't go to college without your shots. You'll need to submit your immunization records and catch up on any measles, mumps, and rubella needles you may have missed (ouch!).
Apply for an "emergency only" credit card so you'll have it in time for school
