"The Green Mountain State" may be famous for the mountain range from which it derives its name, but students at Vermont Colleges and Universities are making it popular for other reasons. Success isn't kept to the classroom in Vermont as notable students are taking their lessons and extending them across campuses and the world. To learn more about these students and the programs that have made their achievements possible, keep reading.

Studies Around the World
Classes at Vermont universities don't always stay in Vermont, as students from Green Mountain College are learning. An anthropology professor was awarded a $33,000 grant to fund a month-long research trip to China for him and five students during the spring of 2006. While there, they will conduct ethnographic research into the changing traditional beliefs of modern families in the Jiangsu Province.

Other students and faculty recently traveled to New Zealand to earn certification as outdoor leaders. Thanks to GMC's affiliation with the Wilderness Education Association, it can offer students the only nationally-recognized certification for outdoor leaders.

  don't stop at homework, they go they extra mile and apply their studies to real-life. Undergraduates from Champlain College are some of the best examples of this mantra. Two students from the class of 2005 spent their final semester at Champlain College's satellite campus in Mumbai, India, where they interned for the Ashadeep Social Service Center. Their work included comforting the ill, improving literacy among women, and advocating for the needy.

Meanwhile, an International Business leadership major spent his recent internship in Shanghai, China, where he worked for the Champlain College organization, Vermont Global Trade Partnership. Of course, not every student from Vermont universities needs to travel so far to put their education in effect. During the fall of 2005, a freshman electronic gaming major started a club on campus to promote female interest in gaming careers.

Ace Students Take the Field and Aid Others
Universities in Vermont (UVM) aren't just about academics or athletics, they're concerned with creating well-rounded students who perform well in both fields. The Catamounts from the UVM are student athletes who excel on and off-the-field. Lowell Bailey, a member of the U.S. Biathlon Team during the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Tourino, is a Cantamount, having graduated in 2005 with a 3.67 GPA from the university. But he wasn't the only one to appear in the Olympics, as eight other Cantamounts coached or competed in events.

But this doesn't mean that other UVM students sit idly by in the sidelines. Many make the most of their college careers by giving back to the community through such programs as UVM's Alternative Spring Break. Rather than vaca in exotic locales, students who participate in the program spend their time aiding communities across the nation through outreach programs and reconstruction efforts.
