Unique Experiences Await You at Alaska State Universities

by Ysolt Usigan
I don't know about you, but I don't know much about Alaska universities. As a matter of fact, I know little to nothing about the entire state of Alaska. To my surprise, the state and its higher education programs have unique programs, and don't even get me started about the state's amazing landscape.

Alaska colleges and universities 101
For instance, you can discover active learning at Alaska Pacific University (APU, Anchorage, AK) through their outdoor education programs. Moreover, excellence comes easy for

. APU has been ranked in the highest echelon of Master's Level Universities in the 2006 edition of U.S. News & World Report's Guide to America's Best Colleges.

Not only does Alaska Bible College (Glennallen, AK) provide spiritual and personal development in a retreat-like setting, the school also creates opportunities for involvement with the Alaska native community - perfect for biblical studies and Christian ministries majors. Students at Alaska Bible College can also study pastoral and educational ministries studies.

What Surrounds Universities in Alaska
"When I first came to Alaska Pacific, I was struck by how beautiful, personal, and genuine this university is," says Douglas M. North, APU's president. "The faculty really cares about students; the students care passionately about their education and about the world; the campus is utterly spectacular."

What President North was referring to when he said beautiful was the Chugach Mountains, Anchorage's bold scenery, and Alaska's healthy wildlife populations. Outdoor perks for students at Alaska universities include skiing, boating, camping, climbing, hiking, rafting, sledding, fishing, bicycling, wildlife watching, and more.

But the state doesn't skimp on convenience and luxury either. In fact, Anchorage, which comprises of 42 percent of Alaska's entire population boasts many cultural and commercial amenities. The states houses a wide array of national retailers, restaurants, hospitals, police and fire forces, fully developed raods and public transportation, and numerous condos that are comparable to that of large cities in the United States.

From One Special Student to Another
For assistant account executive Jenny Hoefel, who graduated from the University of Alaska (UAA, Anchorage, AK) in 2004, Alaska is a prime choice for an educational background. "UAA is a wonderful school with a non-traditional College Experience in store," she explains. "When I was looking at schools, I realized that I didn't have the desire to do the traditional small college town, live in a Dorm, or join a sorority."

Although UAA does offer all of those things, the journalism and public communications major was more interested in the exotic location. "I was able to ski, hike, and play outdoors in one of the most beautiful areas of the world," she recalls. Many Alaska Colleges and Universities offer outdoors-oriented student activities. "Events and clubs focus around activities in the wilderness."

Jenny continues, "I like to think it takes a very special kind of person to live in Alaska, especially to move there for college."

You'd be lying if you said you aren't intrigued by Alaska universities. Draw upon that curiosity and consider Alaska state universities. If you do, a unique experience is guaranteed.
