The Royal Sandwich: A Tasty College Trend
by Ysolt Usigan
It may, in fact, be the best thing since sliced bread. But then again, this college trend is just sliced bread...with some chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, and french fries, drenched in marinara sauce. And, it's precisely this collaborative effort lodged between two slices of bread that's earned royal recognition for the heart-attack-waiting-to-happen sandwich. In September, Maxim crowned the "Fat Darrell," a Rutgers University (New Brunswick, NJ) college trend, the best sandwich in the nation.
In 1997, Abdul Eid, who worked at a "grease truck" -- what students nicknamed the mobile food station -- created the sandwich for a student with a craving and a budget. Then-sophomore Darrell Butler requested the three appetizers on a single bun to save the money it would've cost to buy each item separately.
The result: Fat Darrell, only $4.75! Darrell's cravings in their entirety would've cost him close to $13 if it weren't for Eid's exceptional customer service. And aside from an affordable, although not so healthy, meal, Darrell's request marked the birth of a so-good-you'll-ditch-your-diet college trend.
Following the initial success of the Fat Darrell, Eid then turned the "Fat" idea into a "Fat" line of menu items. He now runs the R.U. Hungry Grill & Pizza, just one of many campus hangouts that serve Fat Mojos (a Fat Darrell with honey mustard instead of marinara), Fat Cats (cheeseburger, french fries, lettuce, tomato, and onion, with mayo and ketchup), Fat Koko (cheesesteak, french fries, and mozzarella sticks, with marinara sauce), and more. Mmm...
So, what started as one student's longing for a fat-filled snack launched into a nationwide college trend. Oh, and FYI, Darrell Butler isn't actually fat, but let's face it -- an "Athletic Darrell" just doesn't sound as appetizing.
