The Right Fit at Four Year Colleges
by Paul D. Rosevear
Whatever it is you're looking to study, there are plenty of
four year colleges
out there to help you achieve your educational goals. A four year university experience is ideal for someone who wants to enjoy a traditional approach to advanced education.
As far as finding the right fit for yourself at four year colleges, admissions officers are looking for more than just numbers. "Test scores and GPAs don't tell the whole story," says Tom Willoughby, vice chancellor for enrollment at The University of Denver, a traditional four year university. "We want to learn about our applicants' commitment to integrity, eagerness to learn, and attitudes toward difference."
Stephen Diehl, director of communications at Green Mountain College (Poultney, VT), agrees. "Rather than purely rewarding high academic achievement, we're looking at issues of character," he says. "Test scores and grades sort of define students in a narrow way that doesn't tell the whole story of a person." Many four year colleges seek a very diverse student body that represents people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
Four year colleges are ideal for students who are interested in obtaining a general or liberal arts education. They offer a wide variety of programs and bachelor's degrees in most areas in the arts and sciences. Disciplines such as English literature, foreign languages, history, political science, psychology, and biology are common at four year universities.
Many students also find that four year universities allow them the time and opportunity to explore several different subjects before settling into one in particular. Also, the transition between undergraduate classes and graduate school is oftentimes easier from four year colleges.
