The Online Poker Tournament: Gambling for Scholarships?

by Ysolt Usigan
That's right -- gambling for scholarships. But students aren't forking out the dough to ante up as they gamble; there's no money required to enter this scholarship poker tournament. And, the winners will receive real money to go toward their education. Got your poker face ready?

The online College Poker Championship tournament gives college students the opportunity to play their hands at the popular casino game, and vie for over $100,000 in scholarship prize money. And, that's not all -- the top winner also scores an all-expenses-paid trip to Cancun and the chance to raise money for his or her favorite charity.

So you can imagine how Grant Coombs, a junior at Washington and Lee University (Lexington, VA), felt when he earned his spot as the first-place winner of this year's online poker tournament. "After the tournament, my friends and family had the same reaction of shock and disbelief," he explains. "But I really did win the entire tournament and $15,000." See for yourself at www.collegepokerchampionship.com.

The 21-year-old encourages other students with an interest in poker to see if they qualify for the scholarship poker tournament, and enter. After all, there's nothing to lose.

After Grant's girlfriend saw the ad on the online College Poker Championship's site and suggested he give it a shot, he entered without any expectations. "I was [familiar] with 'Texas Hold 'Em' through ESPN's coverage of the World Series of Poker, and I've played [casual] games before with my friends," he says. But he never anticipated that the online poker tournament would become his educational jackpot.

"Since winning the scholarship poker tournament, I've been extremely successful playing in various online poker tournaments," he says. Grant points out that his winnings from the college poker tournament have almost paid for his first two years of law school (that's where he's headed after undergrad).

Watch out Atlantic City and Las Vegas -- this future lawyer is planning to take his poker face across the nation this summer. "I don't know where poker will take me in life -- it is, after all, a gamble," he explains. "But, it's a really cool thing to say I'm in the process of funding my entire education through it."
