Study Abroad Quick Tips

by Jennifer Bobrow Burns
Plan in advance. Many students choose to

study abroad

during their junior year, so find out early what the norm is on your campus. Make sure you're clear on how studying abroad fits in with your major, graduation requirements, and post-college plans.

Research your options. There are literally hundreds of programs throughout the world, so you'll want to think about some issues that will narrow down the study abroad choices. What part of the world excites you? What type of climate? Do you want an urban or rural environment? Is there a foreign language you know or want to learn? Also, find out which programs your campus will approve for credit.

Create a budget. Know what your expenses will be and tabulate the cost of living in your new locale. Investigate which costs are covered by your program and which you will be expected to cover yourself during your study abroad experience.

Take care of necessities at home. Before getting on that plane, make sure you have all necessary medications and health aids, as well as extras like rail passes and phone cards, which will make your life overseas easier.

Be open to new experiences. When it comes to totally immersing yourself in another culture and becoming part of a global community, studying abroad is an opportunity like no other. Take advantage of this time - be adventurous, meet different people, and most of all, have a blast!
