Six Tips for Attending an International Job Fair
by Teresa Hall
Most teaching positions abroad are secured through a job fair, as the hiring process is facilitated through placement services. Two of the most highly-regarded services, International School Services and Search Associates, host annual recruitment fairs each year in February on both the East and West Coasts. There is also a prominent job fair held at the University of Northern Iowa, also held in February.
Here, we present our top six tips for attending an international job fair:
1. Start your search early. Although international recruitment fairs are held in February, you should begin contacting the schools you are interested in much earlier. While individual openings won't be confirmed until at least January, you should have your application materials completed by mid-October at the latest.
2. Make sure you are qualified. Most international teaching positions available through job fairs require you have a teaching certificate, a bachelor's degree in your subject area, and at least two years of experience.
3. Bring your resume with a photo. There is a lot of competition at these job fairs, so you want to be certain you do everything you can to increase your chances of being noticed and remembered. Attaching a photo to your resume will help the administrators of the schools remember who you are.
4. Be prepared to act quickly. International teaching job fairs can demand rapid decision-making. Often positions are offered on the condition of immediate acceptance. Know where you are - and aren't - willing to move before you attend the job fair, for the best chance of receiving an offer.
5. Spousal support? If you are married to a teacher and you are both looking for a position, you may actually be at an advantage. Many international schools prefer hiring couples who both aspire to teach abroad.
6. Be flexible. Your chances of securing an international teaching position are greatly increased if you are open to several different geographical areas.
