"Pumping Up" Their Fitness Facilities
by Steven Butler
There are numerous factors to consider when selecting a college. Financial aid, choice of major, school reputation, and admission requirements are just the beginning. Now, in an attempt to woo high-caliber students, colleges are offering such extras as free cable, organic cuisine, and the newest trend - high-quality fitness centers.
These ultra-modern sweat factories usually open early in the morning and close late at night, so all students have an opportunity to take advantage of them, no matter what class schedule they have. These new centers are typically funded by alumni. According to athletic directors, fitness facilities have become an integral part of the campus tour process.
"Recruiters emphasize the concept of a healthy mind and body as a way to progress academically," explains Michael Cunningham, assistant dean of students at Roger Williams University (RWU), Bristol, RI. Along those lines, he adds, RWU is currently expanding their recreational center -- "the old one was just too small."
Likewise, Colgate University, Hamilton, NY, recently completed the William Brian Little Fitness Center, which touts cutting-edge treadmills, weights, stairmasters, a juice bar, and various other equipment. According to athletic director Mark Murphy, the Center has become a very popular gathering place: "It gives students a release and provides a non-alcoholic social option."
Shelli Stevens, a student athlete at Roanoke College, Salem, VA, says she truly benefits from the school's Belk Fitness Center, a state-of-the-art facility that has every imaginable type of equipment. By setting physical goals and achieving them at the fitness center, Shelli is able to increase her mental confidence.
As this trend progresses, schools see constructing these centers as a way to stay competitive. While it will not be the main reason for a student to select a school, administrators contend, it is quite helpful. In addition to attracting determined students, pumped up fitness facilities give students a place to socialize with their peers and faculty members, while at the same time providing them motivation that will carry over to their academics.
