Popular Colleges Aren't Always Winners: How to Find the Top College for You
by Genevieve Blaber
Sometimes it seems like anything and everything can be a popularity contest, but does that mean you should let your College search go the same route? Just because every book and site has a list of
popular colleges
and specially featured universities to share with you, doesn't mean that they're the top college choice for you. After all, someone might be the most popular girl or guy in school, but that doesn't mean they're the best, or that you'd have the most fun hanging out with them. There are many factors to consider as you go about your top College Search... popularity isn't one of them.
Recognition
Here's the Major difference you have to look out for. A college may be popular amongst students but it may not be well respected by the working world. Make an effort, especially if you know what professional field you're interested, to research what kind of reputation a prospective school has before you apply. An employer may put more value on a smaller school than one of the many popular universities.
Track Record
A top college may accomplish great things but fly under the radar because it's not in a cool location or doesn't have young celebrities walking the halls. Spend some time looking up past articles that your college might have been mentioned in. Also, research the scholastic backgrounds of movers and shakers in your field. You may be surprised to find that, instead of hailing from popular colleges, they graduated from smaller, lesser-known, institutions.
Best Fit
The most important thing is to make sure that the college suits you. One of the more popular colleges may not suit you whether it's because of location, class size, tuition, or the majors that they offer. Don't settle on a school because you always see it listed under "Featured Colleges," making your search easier and faster. College is your time to shine, and it's about finding the top school that makes you the best student with the best future possible. So take the time to do your research and find what's best.
I am considering attending the University of Phoenix for my online associate degree. I was wondering if anyone has anything positive to say for this school. by Melanie Hardwick submitted on May 12, 2008
