Passing the Seasons at Missouri State Universities

by Robyn Tellefsen
Applying to Missouri Colleges and Universities is a process that spans the seasons. From deciding where to apply, to transitioning to your school of choice, you'll be engaged in a course of action that will keep you busy all year long. Here's a sneak peek at what you can expect as you prepare for life at universities in Missouri.

Winter
With so many options, it can be tough to decide which Missouri universities to apply to. Fortunately, Chris Collier, assistant director of admission at Stephens College (Columbia), a women's college established in 1833, offers some advice to help you along the way.

"Be assertive," she counsels. "Remember that pressure will come from many sources: schools, Parents, teachers, and peers, but this decision is about you. There are many resources you can call on to make your decision, but the most important is to ask questions and be informed."

"I also encourage you to consider and apply to any school you have even the slightest interest in," she adds. "Until you have completed an application, there is truly no way of knowing what possibilities lie ahead. Scholarships, acceptance, and special programs may be within reach, but not without applying."

Summer
Once you've applied and been accepted to the

Missouri state universities

of your choice, it's time to get acquainted with the place you'll be calling home for the next four years. At William Woods University (Fulton), for instance, you can even get a jump start on college during the summer!

Want to get a true taste of College life? The school's three-week freshman Advantage summer program aids your transition before everyone else returns to campus. While living in the dorms and eating in the dining hall, you'll earn seven credits, meet friends in your incoming class, bond with upper-class mentors, connect with faculty and staff, and learn your way around campus and the community.

Plus, you'll have a blast with activities like an ice cream social, movie night, ropes course, and retreats to such places as Worlds of Fun or Six Flags and Lake of the Ozarks.

Fall
College officially begins! Did you know that student life at Missouri state universities begins the moment you step on campus? That's why the University of Missouri-Kansas City goes all out to make sure you feel secure as you embark on your college Career. How do they accomplish that? Roo Camp! No, it's not a gathering of kangaroos -- it's an overnight retreat where first-year students establish friendships with each other and with student leaders and campus staff, discover the school's unique traditions, and learn about student opportunities and activities outside the classroom.

The overnight indoor camp is jam-packed with hands-on group activities, a ropes course at OAK Ropes leadership Training Course, discussion groups with other first-year students and upper-class student leaders, dynamic guest speakers, pool parties, and more. The camaraderie you'll build will prove how much fun you can have while you're achieving your college goals.

After all, what better place is there to spend the seasons of your life than Missouri universities?
