Notable National Universities
by Genevieve Blaber
As you begin your research into higher education, you'll notice that there are many types of colleges and universities to choose from. Two that might catch your attention are national universities and national colleges. Though, not as widely spoken of as other institutions, national colleges and national universities provide a level of educational prestige both at home and abroad.
National at Home
Originally, the phrase national university referred to a scholastic institution that was created or run by a country's government. As such, American University and the National Defense University in Washington D.C. are the closest things to a national university in the United States. American University was established by an act of Congress in 1893, and is now well known for its Kogod School of Business, School of Communications, and School of Public Affairs. The National Defense University, however, is for personnel in the United States Military with the majority of its students composed of officers and select civilians.
There is also the National University in San Diego, California, which, despite its name, is a private institution that was not founded or run by the U.S. government. In addition to its main location in San Diego, the National University has campuses throughout Southern California and even Nevada and Hawaii.
National Abroad
The U.S. isn't the only country that has national universities. A number of countries, such as Ireland and Australia, have national colleges, which students from the U.S. can attend. The Australian National University boasts individual colleges in such areas of engineering and computer science, law, and science. The National University of Ireland is the name of the federal university system that is comprised of nine different universities and colleges. The universities teach a variety of disciplines ranging from veterinary medicine and food science to philosophy and Celtic studies.
As you continue your college search, keep in mind the opportunities and new experiences that are offered by national colleges both here, and in other countries. You'll be sure to find the school that's right for you if you don't let borders limit your college search.
