New Mexico Colleges and Universities

by Ysolt Usigan
New Mexico is one of the mountain states located in the southwestern United States. The land of plains, plateaus, and mountains is framed by the amazing colors of scenery and grazing livestock. Students at New Mexico colleges can enjoy the state's beauty as well as tourist attractions and the rich culture.

New Mexico's economy is fostered in only a few select cities with manufacturing and other urban-based activities. The majority of the workforce held jobs in service industries. That means about 42 percent worked catering to tourists, computer programming, or serving in restaurants. About 24 percent were employed in wholesale and retail, while six percent worked for the government (including the military). Roughly seven percent worked in construction, four percent in finance, insurance, and real estate, six percent in manufacturing, two percent in agricultural services like forestry and farming, and two percent worked in mines.

As you can see, there are vast opportunities for students graduating from New Mexico colleges. New Mexico is not just about the gorgeous scenery, tourist attractions, and rich culture that traces back years ago. There are plenty of careers for students to consider as well.

But before you consider a career in New Mexico, how about considering what higher education in the state has to offer? In New Mexico, there are 27 public and 16 private institutions of higher learning. This is a lot, considering New Mexico's relatively small population. See what New Mexico colleges have to offer you.
