Montana Colleges and Universities

Named after the Spanish word, montana, which means mountain country, it's been said that Montana offers a treasure of recreational as well as business opportunities. For students at Montana colleges and universities, the state's opportunities are as vast as its ranges.

Recognized for its pristine rivers, magnificent mountains, and wide-open spaces, Montana is also known for its great tourism spots, like Bannack State Park, Glacier National Park, and Powell County Museum. All present rich cultural opportunities for students to explore.

And, for all you nature-loving students, let's not forget about Yellowstone National Park. About 640,000 years ago, a massive volcanic eruption spewed an immense volume of ash that covered all of the western United States, much of the Midwest, northern Mexico, and some areas of the East Pacific. This was one of the many processes that shaped Yellowstone National Park - a region that has been rumored to be "the place where hell bubbles up." And at Montana universities, this natural wonder is right in your backyard.

Thinking of studying archaeology or earth science? The soil surrounding Montana colleges is teeming with opportunity. Aside from the recreation and mountains of Montana, the state is famous for its large mineral deposits in the western region, such as copper, silver, gold, platinum, zinc, lead, and manganese. In the east, the state is noted for its petroleum, natural gas, and vast sub-bituminous coal deposits. Along with Montana's rich mines, it is one of the leading industries in manufacturing forest products, processed foods, and refined petroleum. Universities in Montana offer plenty of programs for all these areas of study.

For those who plan on pursuing a career in business following graduation, the state's thriving industries are something to consider. Luckily, there are some terrific universities in Montana, like the University of Montana at Missoula, Montana State University at Bozeman, and many other outstanding community, public, and private schools of higher education.
