Missouri Colleges and Universities

by Ysolt Usigan
From the Great Plains to the Ozark Mountains, Missouri colleges have much to offer students - the "Show Me State" truly lives up to its name. Missouri's people, for instance, are as diverse as the landscape surrounding the universities in Missouri. In fact, for all you future music majors at Missouri colleges, jazz-and-blues legends and old-time country fiddlers in the hollers originated from the state.

As you can see, the state of Missouri is very rich in history and culture. From American Indian warriors that once inhabited the land, to famous pioneers like Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, visitors and students at Missouri universities are drawn to the heritage of the state. Even better, they're lured to the vast waterways of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. With the abundance of land and wildlife, the rest of the land is balanced out by the thriving cities of Kansas City and St. Louis. There are also beautiful limestone bluffs and winding rivers for students at Missouri colleges to explore.

Missouri's climate consists of periods of almost constantly changing weather. What does exactly this mean? Winters vary geographically and from year to year. They're fairly brisk and seldom severe, but may become extremely cold or unusually warm. Average daily temperatures in the summer range from 78 to 80 degrees. What does this mean for prospective students at universities in Missouri? Never a dull moment.

You might have heard of Route 66. It is important to know that this Mississippi staple is more than just a road. The route is like a ribbon that winds through the soul of the country - it's considered America's "Mother Road" because it was the primary east-west travel route for decades. Imagine cruising down the notorious road en route to your new home at any of the various Missouri universities.

From agribusiness, business taxes, science, and environmental careers, Missouri colleges and the state itself have plenty to offer you once you enter the world of professionals. With outstanding schools and plenty of opportunities in the area, students at

Hi,

My name is Courtnie Akuebionwu. I'm wondering when is the best time to apply for colleges? I will be entering high school this fall as a junior and I would like information on wich school is best for me. I am just having a hard time. So please, when is the best time to apply for college?

Hi Courtnie,

The most common -- and recommended -- time to apply is during senior year of high school. However, you'll find that application deadlines can differ from college to college. While some offer rolling admissions (with applications accepted for several months) others have set deadlines in December or January. If you're absolute certain that you want to attend a particular college, though, early decision admission (with deadlines set in October or November) may be right for you. Just remember that, should you apply early decision, you are considered legally bound to the college and aren't permitted to apply to other schools in the meantime.

If you're still unsure as to which type of admissions is best for you check out this discussion with college officials about the benefits and disadvantages of early decision, versus early action and regular decision.

It's never too early to start your college seach, though! Junior year is the perfect time to work on your grades and research where you might want to attend. Good luck!
