Maryland Colleges and Universities

Maryland is nicknamed the "Free State," and it's no wonder the state provides so many options for studying and fun that you really are free to choose. Maryland colleges range anywhere from small liberal arts colleges to big research universities, and Maryland universities also boast a luring combination of scenic landscapes and close proximity to Washington, D.C.

Famous for its lakes, rivers, and hiking trails, Western Maryland provides more than 100,000 acres of parkland, including Cranesville Swamp Nature Preserve, Savage River State Forest, and Swallow Falls State Park. Although somewhat remote, the area surrounding the universities in Maryland serves as a perfect destination for those wishing to learn more about nature or wildlife.

Chestertown, Maryland is probably more widely known as a colonial town, but many forget its collegiate roots. George Washington personally permitted the founders of one of the universities in Maryland, Washington College, located in Chestertown, to use his name. A short drive from most Maryland colleges takes you to Rock Hall, a waterfront village whose marinas and seafood restaurants are beginning to draw many a tourist - a perfect place for those wishing to pursue hotel or restaurant management and test out their hospitality skills.

Maryland colleges also deliver for those seeking a city-like atmosphere. The state's capital, Annapolis, serves as home base to the United States Naval Academy and St. John's College. The city also offers a touch of history (it's where George Washington resigned as commander in chief) and fun, with many shops, restaurants, and bars lining the streets. Its the ideal venue for students at Maryland universities. Baltimore also delivers the typical delights of city dwelling and many students at Maryland colleges, both technical and major research universities, call Baltimore home.
