Low-Stress SAT Prep
by Amanda Fornecker
The
SAT
is a landmark in your life, but it should not haunt you forever. While the days leading up to that fateful exam may seem daunting, the standardized test shouldn't be something that drives you crazy mentally or physically.
For Michele LoBosco and her sister Jacqueline J. LoBosco, Ph.D., founders of Academics Plus Tutoring Center, such sentiments are their mission. They began Academics Plus in 2000 to help students with SAT preparation and Collegeapplications. Their goal is to help enrich the lives of their students on both the academic and personal levels. The LoBosco sisters recently published their SAT help book, How to Ace the SAT Without Losing Your Cool (MJ Publishing, 2007), to assist students with the SAT preparation process. The book breaks down the SAT by section, presents strategies and key concepts, and gives sample problems with space to work out your answers.
Wondering how to boost your SAT score? Here are some tips, courtesy of the LoBosco sisters:
Your Approach
"View the exam as an opportunity to embrace and approach and develop a skill set that will help you meet future demands. The SAT is a singular event. It is certainly not the only challenging experience you will ever face. So keep your focus on what you do, and then apply yourself to the best of your ability. And then the SAT preparation process can become an empowering process, a means to an end, and be of some assistance in helping you develop those traits that help you succeed in all areas of life."
Supplemental Materials
"Over the years we have seen the negative impact Stress has on a student's Self-Esteem, confidence and motivation levels. We have observed how students develop negative perceptions of themselves based on the performances on these exams. So, we wanted to provide an alternate SAT preparation process -- one that helped students excel but didn't come with such a high price; one that helped them perform to their potential without compromising their well-being."
Real Practice
"It is extremely important for students to supplement their SAT preparation process with frequent SAT diagnostics. We encourage our students to purchase the CollegeBoard SAT book and use the eight practice tests in that book, as well as the online tests released on the CollegeBoard website. In our opinion, these practice exams are the best tools for students to use to monitor their progress since they are designed by the CollegeBoard."
