Ladies on Ice
by Paul D. Rosevear
No, it's not figure skating you're thinking of, it's hockey. U.S. Olympic hockey player Angela "The Terminator" Ruggiero has a new book out called "Breaking the Ice" (Drummond Publishing Group, 2005). It's so much more than just a hockey guide for girls - it also includes info on how they can use their skating skills to get into College.
"I wanted to provide my story to all the girls out there who lack female role models," explains the former student athlete. "I wanted to show that I have had similar obstacles growing up, but that I've been able to overcome them through hard work, perseverance, and a great support system."
Not only is Angela an outspoken motivator for female Student Athletes, she's also an advocate for academics. "I feel so blessed that I was able to attend Harvard University and get a great education," she says. "I had to learn Major time management skills to juggle hockey, academics, and a social life. It was a stressful time, but I learned by trial and error."
Angela's passion for Sports and academics is matched by her mission to dispel myths about women's hockey. "We have all of our teeth!" she says. In fact, women wear full face shields, so they don't have scars. "We still look hot under our masks," adds Angela.
"Also, there is no checking in the women's game, which allows for skill-based competition, versus the brute force and fighting you see in men's hockey," she explains. "It's fast and fun to play." For more info on Angela and her new book, visit www.offthepodium.com.
