Kirsten: I'm a Bookworm at Heart

by Genevieve M. Blaber
Most teens are psyched for June, when school ends and summer begins, but

KIRSTEN PROUT

, who starred alongside JENNIFER GARNER in last year's "Electra," has another reason to be happy. That's when the ABC Family show, "Kyle XY," in which she plays the next-door neighbor of a boy who has mysteriously appeared in the woods, debuted.

It's a role Kirsten looks forward to developing, as each episode reveals new details. "It's a very top-secret and mysterious set," she says, adding that even cast members don't know what's happening until the week of taping.

While the show may be an ongoing mystery, Kirsten is an open book. She readily admits that she's addicted to shopping at vintage stores, confides that her love of acting blossomed from her desire to be a Disney princess, and confesses that she's a bookworm at heart. Currently attending a private Canadian school, Kirsten loves English class and is considering studying literature when she gets to college.

Though she's still a sophomore in high school, the 15-year-old already knows that higher ed is on her horizon. For her, it will ensure that she's "respected as an individual -- not just as an actress."

Hollywood looks promising for this rising star, but she's practical. "In acting, second-place gets you nothing," says Kirsten who recalled how miserable she was when she didn't get a movie role she had her heart set on. When her mother tried to cheer her up by reassuring her that a positive would come out of a negative, Kirsten was dubious. But she was soon proven wrong when she was offered the part of Abbey in "Electra," a job that she wouldn't have been able to take had she landed that first part.

Now with her current role in "Kyle XY," she's ready to tackle the small screen as well. "I originally wasn't going to do TV," admits Kirsten. "[But] this show was so beautifully written. Every scene was a different metaphor." And for a wordsmith like Kirsten, what could be better?
