In the Job Shadow: Interning in Public Relations
by Krista Michelle Arrigo
Name: Sherri Ortore
Major: Communication Arts
College: St. John's University (Staten Island, NY)
Age: 22
Dream Company: L'Oreal
When Sherri Ortore accepted an internship at The CollegeBound Network (CB Teen's parent company), she never expected she'd discover her dream job. "I didn't really know much about
public relations
(PR) until I interned," she says. "It made me love it enough to pursue a career in it."
As an intern, Sherri assisted the director of communications and events by preparing media releases and advisories, and collaborated on special projects, like the CB Teen Style Expo and scholarship contests. She also helped organize and create press releases, and monitor newspapers for articles about the company.
"I was part of the team," Sherri says. "[Interning] allowed me to learn better and gain hands-on experience." It also confirmed her interest in the public relations field, which was first sparked when she took an Intro to PR course in college. She was intrigued by the idea of helping publicize news and information, and feel good about what she does.
"I think it's a good career to get into," she says. "You get newsworthy material out there and [afterward] you feel like you've accomplished something in helping a person, a cause, or whatever you're promoting."
Sherri also likes that public relations work allows her to use a variety of skills. "I use different talents, [including] writing, researching, talking, and presenting."
With her mind set and graduation day approaching, Sherri did all she could to ensure she'd have a public relations job upon completing college. "I sent resumes all over and went on a bunch of interviews," she says. "I'm trying to find the best opportunity [and] not settle on the first thing that comes my way."
