Dribbling Doctor: Student Athlete Star Aims for Med School
by Paul D. Rosevear
Marisa Gobuty dreams of attending the University of Maryland (College Park, MD) and studying pre-med. She's got a 4.0GPA and she loves to play basketball. None of these things are all that unusual - except for the fact that her love for basketball has led the 16-year-old
Student Athlete
to play for the Israeli national team.
"Playing on the team is an amazing experience," says the Canadian-born prodigy. "Especially since I had tried out for the team the year before, made it down to the final 14 girls, and then broke my finger in practice. It was heartbreaking."
With all 10 fingers intact, Marisa finished what she started by making the team, and went on to the European Championships this past summer. But even at the top of her game, it isn't a Career in the pros that Marisa has her heart set on - she's shooting for the life of a college studentathlete. "Basketball is my life, and I've been doing it for a long time," she says. "Right now I'm just really looking forward to school. I love the idea of staying in the same place for four years. And I like the idea of doing something different with my life - like being a doctor."
