Dorm Move-In Prep Tips

by Ysolt Usigan
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to move into your dorm room with strategy and style.

The anticipation for the infamous moving day is stressful. You don't know what to pack, what will even fit in the small living space you're assigned, and what to leave behind. And there's that fear looming overhead that you'll forget something you absolutely can't live without -- like socks, a hairdryer, or your favorite pair of sneakers. Not to mention, the errands you have to run before you leave home, like shopping, checkups, and preparing for a new home away from home.

Don't fret just yet. Read on for tips from DormPac on moving preparation...

Mission >> Run Errands

  • Compile a list (start with the one below), and cross off each task as it's accomplished.

  • Make check-up appointments with doctors and dentists.

  • Obtain copies of medical and dental insurance cards and physician info, and verify out of state coverage and procedures.

  • Find a local cellular provider so you won't have to pay long distance and roaming charges from your home-based phone.

  • If moving out of state, locate a bank close to the dorm.

  • Print or purchase mailing labels for your parents to use when sending care packages, checks from home, greeting cards, etc.

  • Mission>> Pack

  • Don't overpack, but don't underpack, either. Bring what you need, and mark all valuables.

  • Coordinate any purchases with roommates to avoid duplication.

  • Mark with an etching tool all valuable electronics, PCs, bikes, etc. with driver's license number for security. Keep a record of all serial and model numbers in a safe place or at home. Photos of items are also helpful when filing insurance claims.

  • Bring in-season clothing. Next season's clothes should be delayed since space is limited.

  • Pack all the necessities (cleaning supplies, laundry bags or baskets, sheets, extension cords, etc.).

  • As dorm move-in day approaches, keep these strategies and prep tips in mind. You can either fly by the seat of your freshman pants or move into the dorm with a plan. The prepared freshman is the one who didn't forget a thing, had enough room for his or her stuff, and got the better mattress. Which one do you want to be?
