Considering College or a Career

by Sarah Zimmerman
While young entrepreneurs are laying the foundation for a future Career, they are also being faced with the difficult decision of College -- to stay or ditch? College or a career?

It was this dilemma that recent Yale University (New Haven, CT) grad Sean Glass encountered as an undergrad. He started an entrepreneurial society at school his sophomore year, which led to his own Business, Higher One. "Since my friends [Miles Lasater and Mark Volcheck] and I had started the society, we figured we ought to walk the walk rather than just talk the talk," recalls Sean.

Higher One (www.higherone.com) is a Financial service company that deals mainly with disbursements, which provides students with refunds from their college or university. The company helps schools pay students more efficiently, and also provides features such as year-round student accounts with no minimum balance required.

Sean was faced with deciding between college or a career. He knew it would be hard Work getting Higher One off the ground -- even more so while simultaneously working on his degree -- but with a creative team and determination, he managed to accomplish both.

Today, Sean holds the title of chief marketing officer, in addition to his degree from Yale. He struggled with the idea of staying in college while pursuing his entrepreneurial dreams -- he was only 19 when he started the company -- but managed to keep on track with both. "It was difficult, but education is so important," he explains. "I was lucky enough to be at Yale -- I couldn't give that up."

Sean often looks back on his decision to

, and has no regrets. "All of my classes at Yale in some way relate to an aspect of my business," he reflects. It wasn't easy, but it was so worth it, he adds. "You have to be ready for it to be twice as hard, twice as much work, and twice as much Money as you expected."
