College: Should You Go for It?

by Ysolt Usigan
Making the decision whether or not

going to college

is right for you may be easier than you think. Although the idea of going to college may seem intimidating at first, you'll come to realize that it's an awesome option for both education and career pursuits, as well as personal development. See how this student dealt with the challenges of making big college decisions!

Going to College and Starting Fresh
For Elise Zito, Wagner College (Staten Island, NY) alum, going to college was an easy decision. "When I started my College Search, all I knew was that I wanted to get away, start fresh, and not know anyone around me," she recalls. "I had always loved the idea of being a 'New York City chick,' so I chose Wagner." Another motivation to go to a school away from home was for the change of scenery. "The campus was so beautiful -- it was like love at first sight."

College Adjustments
Although Elise was firm in her decision on going to college, going away to college became a whole different story. "I think I underestimated how hard it would be to adjust to an entirely new environment," explains the English major. "I went from a small town to a big city, and from having lots of friends to knowing no one." Going to college can sometimes feel foreign -- there may be friendly faces, but they're unknown friendly faces nonetheless.

"I remember the first night after my parents dropped me off and everyone else was at the welcome dinner and I hid away in my room, cried, and then called my best friend back home so I didn't feel so alone," Elise recalls.

Finally Getting Settled
How was she able to get over her new school separation anxiety? "After the initial shock, I did make new friends, and I quickly came to love college life. I think being so far away from home (a seven-hour drive) helped me gain a lot of independence," explains the May 2005 graduate. "I only saw my family during breaks, and so I learned to take care of myself." So keep in mind, future undergrad, going to college can be extremely scary at first. Ride it out and accept its many challenges.

From making new friends to finding your way around campus, going to college is all about exploration. As you face the social, academic, and personal challenges, realize that you're going to be OK. Elise didn't know what to make of the big city at first, but she eventually realized all her school had to offer. "Come on -- it's New York City!" she attests. "The opportunities are endless! I don't have any regrets when it comes to going to college -- [especially since] I met my husband during my sophomore year at school, and now New York City is my home." Look into going to college for all its challenges and wonders.
