Boarding School Spotlight: The Phelps School

by Robyn Tellefsen
Education shouldn't be a one-size-fits-all experience. If you want your son to benefit from a structured and caring learning environment, consider

The Phelps School

, a small, all-boys boarding school whose motto is "Dedication to the individual boy."

Background
The Phelps School was founded in 1946 for boys who need extra personal attention to help them reach their potential. The Malvern, PA, school serves boys in grades seven through postgraduate, who are of average to above average intelligence. The Phelps School focuses on getting to know each student well in order to help shape a course of study for him that will enable him to enhance his strengths and improve his skills. The goal of the all-boys boarding school is to create a nurturing and responsive climate that will bring out the best in each student, helping him gain self-confidence and acquire respect for those around him.

Student profile
The population of The Phelps School is incredibly diverse. Many Phelps students struggle with executive functioning (organization, time management, decision making, etc.), so this is a major emphasis of the education program. Some Phelps students have a diagnosed attentional issue or a minor learning difference; others have never undergone a psychoeducational evaluation. Some students come to the all-boys boarding school with IEPs (Individualized Educational Programs); others have taken advanced-level courses throughout their entire academic careers. A number of Phelps students take advantage of the comprehensive ESL (English as a Second Language) program. The Phelps School is not equipped to serve the needs of boys requiring extensive behavior modification, emotional support, or accommodation for severe learning differences.

Academic emphasis
With a strong emphasis on the fundamentals of reading, English, math, and science, as well as study skills, The Phelps School's well-rounded curriculum prepares boys for the next step in life. The average class size is eight, so every boy can participate freely and without pressure in classroom discussions. Students at the all-boys boarding school are encouraged to take advantage of tutorial sessions with their teachers, who are available every afternoon. Resident faculty members monitor formal study periods in the dorms five nights a week.

College preparatory education
The Phelps School provides a unique college preparatory education within an academically supportive environment. Although some young men may opt for the world of work or to join the armed forces, it is school policy that upon graduation every Phelps student will have the opportunity to matriculate at a two- or four-year institution. The all-boys boarding school has recently graduated prolific writers, brilliant mathematicians, stellar athletes, gifted musicians and artists, and young entrepreneurs.

Extracurricular activities
The Phelps School offers a comprehensive athletic program. Teams compete in the Tri-County Independent School League in soccer, cross-country, basketball, lacrosse, tennis, baseball, and golf. Plus, the indoor equestrian center offers all levels of instruction in horsemanship and horse care. In addition to interscholastic and recreational athletics at the all-boys boarding school, activities include photography, publications, music, ceramics, painting, chess, fitness training, martial arts, volleyball, and bowling.
