Beat the College Admissions Stress
by Lynda Kessler
(To the tune of Auld Lang Syne)
Should applications be forgot?
And wait 'til March or April?
Or do we keep on checking the mail
Until we've scared the postman?
We need to know our admissions status.
We must receive acceptance.
Oh please, give me a large envelope
Instead of a skimpy letter.
And while you wait for those lovely "letters," here are some sites to stimulate your senses and help you cope with the unpleasant side effects of
college admissions
stress.
Admissions Stress Therapy Site #1: youthtech.com
When it comes to computers, most people know how to chat and surf. Your realm of information technology doesn't have to be limited, though. Here's a cool site where you can learn about networking and other techie skills. And for computer geeks who already know all that, surf anyway to meet other future Apple guru Steve Jobs-wannabes like yourselves.
Admissions Stress Therapy Site #2: birthdatabase.com
Start the year off right by remembering everyone's birthday. If you can't recall what day your buddies blow out the candles, this site can help you because it uses government records to give you the 4-1-1.
Admissions Stress Therapy Site #3: superbad.com
This is by far the coolest, yet strangest site I've ever killed an hour's time on. I'm still trying to figure out what the images mean, if there even is a meaning. You've got to see it for yourself to know what I'm talking about.
Admissions Stress Therapy Site #4: vocabulary.co.il
Flashcards can be helpful and fun. Reading is great, too. But crossword puzzles make learning vocabulary so much more fun -- especially online, where you don't have to erase all the wrong answers and get eraser flakes all over your clothes.
Admissions Stress Therapy Site #5: ThinkExist.com
When picking schools to apply to becomes tiring and hopeless, it might be a good idea to seek some advice, not only from ourselves and your guidance counselors, but also by reading famous words of wisdom. If it's a quote for an essay or speech opening that you seek, ThinkExist is a cool site for that, too!
