Are You Nerd Material?

by Dawn Papandrea
Forget about Skolnick and Poindexter - nowadays, being nerdy is in. Just think of REESE WITHERSPOON in Election, Matt DAMON in Good Will Hunting, and that comic crack-up DREW CAREY. Then you've got the real-life braniacs LISA KUDROW, a Vassar grad', and Star Wars queen, NATALIE PORTMAN, who went from Queen Amidala to Ivy (Ivy League, that is).

Find out if you've got what it takes to be part of the nerd-herd:

1. Your chem professor asks for volunteers to help with an experiment. You:

a. can't wait to show off the skills you've developed as a child with a chemistry set, so you get that hand up immediately.
b. wouldn't mind helping out but are worried something might splash on your new khakis.
c. roll your eyes and go back to sleep.

2. The SATs are just two months away. You spend every waking moment:

a. practicing vocabulary words on the flashcards you made the summer before - you can never start too early.
b. worried what you'll wear that day - after all, everyone will be there.
c. complaining that the stupid test is given so early in the morning and on a Saturday.

3. For your last birthday, you got:

a. a subscription to National Geographic and the Star Trek movie collection.
b. a GAP gift certificate, an Abercrombie & Fitch gift certificate, and a Tommy Hilfiger backpack.
c. punished for staying out past your curfew.

4. You're all set to catch a movie with your friends but you haven't decided what to see. You vote for:

a. the new KENNETH BRANAGH version of "Macbeth."
b. forget the movie -- go shopping instead.
c. a WILL SMITH "period piece" action flick.

5. Your English teacher announces a 10-page paper will be due in two weeks. You:

a. start thinking of a topic immediately and run it by your teacher right after class.
b. find out where your friends want to hang out this weekend -- you've got plenty of time to worry about the paper.
c. find an upperclassman who did the same assignment last year and make him/her an offer.

6. You've been thinking about which College to attend. You've got it narrowed down to a few but it'll all depend on:

a. their academic programs, student-to-faculty ratio, and reputation.
b. the number of fraternities, the male-to-female ratio, and nightlife.
c. the Sports teams, the studying-to-partying ratio, and the dorms.

7. In your opinion, a person is measured by:

a. the size of their brain and what's in it, of course.
b. the number of parties they get invited to.
c. the amount of work they can get out of doing.

Report Card Time!

Mostly As: Get your pocket-protector ready -- you're the ultimate nerd and you're proud of it. Straight As are a given with you, but you do need to lighten up once in a while. You may not be down with the party crowd, but your hard work will pay off (maybe in the form of a college scholarship!).

Mostly Bs: You'd rather die than be caught saying hello to your teacher in the hall. You've got the potential, and maybe even Good Grades, but you make sure your nighttime reading habits and early morning study sessions remain a secret that your clique never finds out about.

Mostly Cs: You wish you could just get the school thing over with already. When it comes down to it, however, you somehow manage to get by. Better start gearin' up for the college crunch!
