An Inside College Internship
by Lauren Berger
"During the summer of 2003, I participated in the Arista National Sales internship in New York City. I gained a great deal of respect for and knowledge of all that goes on behind the scenes in the music industry." That from Alyson Campbell, a senior at the University of Acadia (Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada).
Working for a record company sounds pretty cool, huh? And what's even cooler is that tons of professions -- from fashion and media companies to Financial firms and public relations organizations -- have openings for interns. The trick is to find the right internship for you, in the right location, and during the right timeframe.

Many books in the bookstore, library, or Career center at school will inform you about internships. A good read? The Internship Bible (The Princeton Review, 2003). Books like this list the name, location, requirements, and contact names for specific internships in all fields across the country, and are definitely a super starting point for seeing what's out there.
Go Surfin'.
Web sites such as internships.com, entertainmentcareers.net, and monsterjobs.com can also help you find an internship that fits your needs and dreams. Start by calling or e-mailing the contact listed, and ask the following: Is the internship still available? What type of responsibilities does an intern have? To whom should a resume and cover letter be sent? Take notes, so you're ready for the next step.

positions in schools. Don't be afraid to take advantage of your guidance counselor -- he or she is there to guide you, after all!
Rachel Roswall, internship coordinator and editor of Nickelodeon Magazine -- as well as a former intern for the mag -- stresses the opportunity's impact. "I think the most important aspect of an internship is the hands-on experience a student can gain. Interning can also help students establish contacts for the future."
