Aly & A.J.: "Into the Rush" of Education
by Paul D. Rosevear
Not only are 16-year-old Aly and her 14-year-old sister A.J. totally in sync with one another -- they write songs together, sing together, and constantly finish each other's sentences -- they're also in sync with education.
"I've really pushed myself to finish high school early," says Aly, who will graduate in June. "studying is very important to both of us. When things got busy with our music Career, we started home-schooling, which is really helpful -- we love the one-on-one learning."
In fact, it was an interest in learning that kicked off the girls' career in showbiz. "We used to put on our own plays as kids and sing and act in community theater," explains Aly. "One day my dad got a flyer for acting lessons in the mail and put it on my mom's desk as a joke. When I saw it, I started jumping up and down and begging for lessons -- I didn't even know something like that existed!"
And the classes were the real deal, adds A.J. "We completed all the courses and training, then we did a big workshop that a few agents attended. People were interested in us and we met our manager from there."
Since the debut of their album, "Into the Rush," the sisters have been in the middle of a whirlwind of performing, touring, and press engagements, but they also cherish the excitement of being normal teens. "A.J. and I still go to school functions with our friends, and we get asked out to events and stuff," explains Aly. "We don't miss out on the high school experience completely, but at the same time, we're on this huge ride we're passionate about. We have the best of both worlds."
But something they definitely do not want to miss out on is the College experience. "Education is so important to us and college would be such an incredible experience," says Aly. "We feel very strongly about going, and we'd like to stay here in California, near all of our friends and family." Visit www.alyandaj.com for tour dates and info.
