Alicia Was Never "Fallin'" Behind in Her Studies
by Robyn Tellefsen
A graduate of the Professional Performing Arts School (PPAS, New York, NY) at the tender age of 16, the now 27-year-old R&B diva
ALICIA KEYS
embodies musical talent, beauty, and brains. This class valedictorian was offered a full Scholarship to Columbia University in New York City, but ultimately opted to concentrate on her Career first.
The fruit of her labor? A Grammy-winning album, Songs in A Minor. Alicia's award-winning talents are no surprise to her former teachers and administrators.
"She was very single-minded about what she wanted to achieve," asserts PPAS Assistant Principal Kim Bruno. "When she wanted something, she went after it wholeheartedly. I'm not surprised she's gone as far as she has."
At school, Alicia was known for her dedication to her studies, musical and otherwise. "She was a terrific, serious student," says humanities teacher Sue Schaller.
Bruno agrees. "You could always find her locked away in a music room, composing on the piano," she recounts. "Alicia wasn't one to just hang out and waste time."
Plus, students at PPAS are still singing her praises. "She has an enormous fan club," says Schaller. "Students are so impressed with me because I had the opportunity to teach Alicia Keys!"
