Admissions Office Q&A: The Dos and Don'ts of College Preparation

by Scott Novak
Featuring Scott Novak, former assistant director of admissions, St. John's University (Queens, NY)

Q: I'll be starting college next year and was hoping you could lend some advice. What I'm really looking for are some dos and don'ts.

A:
What to Do
1. Do call or write your roommate(s) ahead of time to get to know them and see what they plan to bring.
2. Do some reading over the summer to keep your mind fresh. Preparation can be a huge comfort.
3. Do call the school and confirm your room, roommate, class schedule, registration times, etc.
4. Do start making lists of things you don't want to forget.
5. Do start saving up pocket money.
6. Do visit your school and walk around to get a feel for the campus.
7. Do call someone who has been to college to get some last minute tips.
8. Do go over your financial aid package and double-check your payment schedules.
9. Do become a pro-active person! This means being a go-getter, trying your hardest to make your dreams a reality, and getting in the zone!
10. Do enjoy your senior year and summer before college!

What Not to Do
1. Don't wait until the last minute to pack.
2. Don't assume that all the dates and times on your schedule are correct.
3. Don't think you can walk into your first class without having done anything all summer.
4. Don't assume your roommate(s) will bring everything.
5. Don't believe that college will be just one big party.
6. Don't be scared by stories you hear about people being homesick. Everyone is different!
7. Don't answer every question by using the word "whatever" when you are reminded to get things done.
8. Don't overwork yourself in preparation for classes.
9. Don't assume you know the campus just because you went on a tour.
10. Don't worry! College is an unbelievable experience. Be excited!
