Admissions Office Q&A: Online Courses, Senioritis, and Application Essays

by Patricia Armstrong
Featuring Patricia Armstrong, director of admissions, St. John's University (New York, NY)

Q. How can I write an awesome College essay if I'm "regular" and nothing amazing has ever happened to me?

A. I take it from your question that you're uncomfortable writing about yourself -- don't be! Most colleges will offer a selection of topics for you to choose from, ranging from who you think is the most famous person in history to how you plan to put your education to use to improve the world. Even better -- some colleges require an essay on a topic of your choosing. Whatever your angle, be certain to write about something that interests you -- and be yourself!

It's important to present yourself well in the College Essay. Rather than worrying about what to do, concern yourself with what not to do. Grammatical and spelling errors will make your essay stand out -- but not in a positive way! That's why you should exercise great care in proofreading your essay. If you're using word processing software, don't fall into the trap of merely running "spell check;" you need to also make sure you're using the proper form of the word. As an admissions professional, I can honestly say that there is nothing worse than a carelessly written essay. Many admission professionals will agree that nothing stands out more than an essay riddled with grammar, spelling, and sentence structure flaws. Checking and double-checking your essay to make sure it's error-free is vital.

Other helpful hints: Don't worry about using "big" words and don't feel compelled to turn to your thesaurus all the time. Writing in your own language is always the best way to express your thoughts.

To sum it up - whether or not you think you're "regular," there is something unique about you! If you write on a topic about which you're enthusiastic, the real, amazing you will shine through!

Q. Are online classes only for adults who have no time to attend school, or can I take them, too?

A. Online classes are usually offered to all students, although each college and university has its own specific cyber-course guidelines and requirements. At many institutions, however, online courses have become a part of the curriculum. (Keep in mind though, the number of online courses will vary by major, as not all disciplines lend themselves easily to online access.) At St. John's University, we offer dozens of undergraduate courses via the Internet for students whose circumstances demand more flexibility or who want an interactive educational experience.

An advantage of online learning is being actively engaged with the professor and students in discussion groups and chats. Some participants feel even more comfortable "chatting" online than they do speaking aloud in a traditional class! But online learning isn't for everyone... it requires discipline and commitment. So make an assessment of your learning style. If you're tech-savvy and educationally enthusiastic, you'll do just fine!

Q. How can I make the most of my senior year of high school?

A. The most important thing to remember is that you should continually challenge yourself and maintain Good Grades throughout your senior year. Students frequently feel that they need to put their all into their junior year as that is the most critical period in the college decision making process. While junior year is important, you'll need to maintain a high level of academic performance throughout your senior year, too.

You may have heard the term "senioritis" -- a time when end-of-high-school relief and joy turns into laziness. Don't let this happen to you; don't be lured by the temptation to ease off in your academics, extracurricular activities, or Job. Remember, you never want to experience the pain of having an offer of admission withdrawn due to poor final grades!

Of course, I know that won't happen to you!

All the best, and good luck! P.A.
