Academics Aren't the Only Advantage at Colleges and Universities

by Elise Zito
So you want to go to college. What better way to have some fun while boosting your brainpower, right? Academics aside, attending

colleges and universities

can provide you with numerous opportunities to expand your horizons and enjoy life via cool campus programs and events. Check out what's happening at some of the colleges and universities around the country.

Adventurous Opportunities Abound
What: The Odyssey
Where: Davidson College (Davidson, NC)
How: Students getting ready for their freshman year at Davidson College should remember to pack their hiking boots. "The Odyssey," a summertime excursion for incoming students, leads student groups into the mountains for one week of hiking, backpacking, white-water rafting, community service, and some serious bonding. Before hitting the books, these freshmen will already be best buds. And you don't have to be the nature-loving type to have fun at this school. For those who aren't too keen on the outdoors, Davidson offers a community service "adventure," packed with just as much excitement and opportunity.

Swimming in September
What: The Bar Island Swim
Where: College of the Atlantic (Bar Harbor, ME)
How: You better hope the summer stays hot through the month of September if you're planning on attending this Northeastern school. Every year, the College of the Atlantic celebrates the start of a new academic year with the Bar Island Swim, where students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to exercise their swimming skills in the Frenchmen Bay. The goal? Stay afloat until you reach Bar Island, about a third of a mile away. Not many students at colleges and universities can say they swam to an island with their peers and professors, in September no less.

No Business Like Your Own Business
What: Foundation Management Experience (FME)
Where: Babson College (Babson Park, MA)
How: Want to manage your own business before you've even finished your freshman year of college? Then Babson's got just the program for you. The Foundation Management Experience, which is required of all first-year students, gives students the opportunity to develop, launch, and manage their own businesses. Students form small groups and work together throughout the year to establish a thriving business. With $3,000 start up cash per group, last year's business-savvy students raked in a whopping $62,500 (all proceeds were donated to the charity of their choice).

These programs and events are just a taste of what goes on at colleges and universities all over the country. If you're interested in learning more about colleges and universities in your area, or colleges and universities in other parts of the country, then make sure to do your research to find the school that's right for you.
