5 Reasons to Consider City Colleges

by Robyn Tellefsen
Everyone knows the city is sexy. But do you know the unique opportunities an urban education affords?

1. Direct link to the community
By definition, city colleges are municipally funded and are designed to serve the needs of the residents of the city in which they are situated. With city colleges offering such a direct link to the community, you won't have to fear what so many small liberal arts college students do--education in a bubble. There is no bubble in urban education because it encompasses study of the real world, in the real world.

2. Focus on social justice
Not only can you receive an excellent education in the classroom, but, by its very nature, urban education offers extensive study outside the classroom as well. After all, cities are an education in themselves, and city colleges are in a unique position to provide hands-on involvement with complex urban issues. That's why these schools are often the birthplace of activists eager to confront the challenges of modern urban life.

3. Access to cultural exhibits and events
Cities are centers of artistic and intellectual creativity, offering a rich array of cultural resources, such as renowned museums, landmarks, Broadway shows, concerts, and more. And as a student of city colleges, you can often gain entry to these events for free or reduced admission.

4. Diversity without pretension
Many colleges say they champion diversity, but city colleges don't have to work to make diversity happen--they are ready-made arenas for the interaction of diverse people and cultures. Aside from its obvious racial and linguistic diversity, urban education extends to working adults and recent high school graduates, natives and immigrants, middle class and the working poor. Learning in this kind of heterogeneous environment offers a much broader worldview than the typical homogenous college campus.

5. Abundant career opportunities
Cities represent business, economic growth, and innovation, which translate into more practical internships and increased job opportunities for students of city colleges. Plus, the occupational courses and programs at city colleges prepare you for immediate employment. Even if you choose to leave the city after you earn your degree, chances are you'll end up in another urban setting, and your education will have even greater value.

If you're seeking a truly well-rounded college experience, consider an urban education from city colleges. You're sure to be in good company.
